As the winter takes its final breaths, the sweet smell of spring awakens our senses for BBQ parties, refreshing cocktails and the sound of children’s’ giggles as they jump in the pool. Ah, summer is almost here and the time to spend more quality time with our friends and family outdoors.
There are a number of ways to improve our backyard experience and get the most out of our summer. One obvious and major improvement is building a new deck or sprucing up an existing one. Not only does a new deck improve the look of our back yard but it also adds value to our home. There are many options available when it comes to building materials for a deck construction.
The most common is pressure treated wood, which can resist mildew and bacteria and is very durable; however, it can shrink or split.
Cedar or Redwood is another popular option. These types of wood produce oils, which are a natural deterrent for insects and rot. However, a downside of cedar and redwood is that they are significantly more expensive than the pressure treated wood and they also require regular maintenance, every 3-4 years approximately.
Composite decking is basically a mix of wood fibre and recycled plastic pressed together with an illusion of wood grains. It is very durable and won’t shrink or warp like regular wood. Although this type of material tends to be more expensive, it is almost maintenance free and has a longer life span than wood.
If one wanted to upgrade their existing deck, a simple but stylish upgrade could be done by replacing the railing. Very popular options are wrought iron designs or a combination of wrought iron and glass panels. It gives it that instant modernized look without going into a big construction of replacing the entire deck.
Understandably, not everybody has it in their budget to invest in a new deck, but updating your deck furniture might just do the trick! Maybe a new outdoor rug and some new colourful cushions will be enough to give your deck a refreshed look.
Whichever way you decide to go, I hope your summer will be an enjoyable one. Cheers my friends!
